Dental bridgeDental bridges are one of the most common treatments for tooth loss. A dental bridge fills in the space that is left when a tooth (or set of teeth) goes missing, allowing patients to enjoy an attractive smile that functions as intended. At our dental practice, Dr. Steven Hochfelder offers the Prettau® bridge, which is made of translucent zirconia that closely resembles the natural teeth.

Dental bridge treatment does not require a lengthy recovery. However, we want our Lake Mary, FL, patients to have realistic expectations about dental bridge recovery and aftercare. Here, patients can learn more about what to expect in the days following dental bridge treatment.

Dental Bridge Side Effects

At our practice, Dr. Hochfelder secures a Prettau bridge with dental implants. Dental implants are placed in the jaw during an oral surgery procedure. Once the implants have fused with the bone tissues and the gums have completely healed, the implants will be attached to small metal abutments. Metal abutments protrude from the gum line, where they are used to secure dental restorations such as a dental bridge.

Another option is to have a traditional dental bridge placed. Traditional bridges are secured to adjacent teeth with dental crowns. Whether they are attached to dental implants or crowns, placing the dental bridge is fairly simple, but it can result in some minor side effects.

We advise our Lake Mary patients to be prepared to deal with any of the following side effects in the days after dental bridge placement:

  • Inflammation
  • Heightened sensitivity in the teeth or gums
  • Discomfort or irritation

How Long Does Recovery Last?

Recovery from a dental bridge placement does not last long. Most dental bridge side effects resolve within just a few days after treatment, although inflammation may last a little longer. And because dental bridge side effects are usually minor, they should be easy to manage and not interfere with a person’s ability to perform their usual routine and functions. Our patients should be able to eat, drink, and return to work almost immediately following the dental bridge procedure, should they choose to do so.

Aftercare Tips

Our Lake Mary patients don’t need to make any drastic adjustments in the days following dental bridge placement, but there are some simple aftercare tips that may make their recovery period even easier:

  • If pain or inflammation is a concern, consider the use of an over-the-counter pain medication that contains anti-inflammatories
  • Ice packs may be applied to the outer cheeks (if needed) to reduce inflammation
  • Until discomfort or sensitivity subsides, avoid hot or cold foods and beverages, and those that are especially hard or crunchy
  • Continue to brush and floss regularly
