Missing teeth can have a drastic effect on your appearance and oral health. Dr. Steven Hochfelder places and restores dental implants at his Lake Mary practice, helping you reclaim a complete and healthy smile. Implants are small titanium posts that are surgically implanted in the jaw bone to replace missing tooth roots and support crowns, bridges and dentures. Why Choose Implants?
Implants have a number of advantages that may make them the ideal tooth replacement option for you. First, they provide the most secure means of support for restorations. This means your restorations will never slip out of place, impede your speech, or keep you from enjoying your favorite foods. With implant-supported restorations, you can bite into a crisp apple or juicy steak without a second thought. Dental implants can also have a profound impact on your overall dental health. Missing teeth can cause atrophy of the jaw bone, receding gum tissue, and further tooth loss. Implants can actually prevent this depletion of jaw bone. Above all, dental implants are comfortable, lifelike restorations designed to improve your quality of life by allowing you to smile, chew, and speak with absolute confidence.
About Dental Implants & Bone Grafting
At your initial consultation and exam, Dr. Hochfelder will gauge your jaw bone density to determine the type of implants that would work best for you. In some cases, bone grafting may be needed prior to surgery. In the absence of tooth roots, the body will begin to redistribute bone cells from the jaw, causing it to atrophy, or shrink. If you have waited a long time to address a missing tooth, it may be necessary for Dr Hochfelder to perform a bone graft to restore lost bone mass so that your jaw can accommodate an implant.
After implant surgery, the jaw will heal over a period of three to six months, becoming fused to the implants. When healing is complete, you will return to Dr. Hochfelder’s office, and he will place a customized abutment piece on the exposed top of the post. The abutment piece attaches to a crown or bridge, which is carefully fabricated to match the color and shape of your surrounding teeth. The implant posts act like a natural tooth roots, providing a stable, permanent base for the restoration.
Different Types of Implants
Dr. Hochfelder offers several kinds of dental implant restorations to meet patient needs, including:
- Single implants – One implant restored with a crown can replace a single missing or severely damaged tooth.
- Mini dental implants – Smaller posts may be an option for patients with compromised jaw bone structure.
- Implant-supported dentures - Implants can be used to support a dental bridge (partial denture) or full dentures on the upper or lower arch.
